Winter seems unfavorable for going outside, but this isn’t entirely true. Learn about some outdoor activities that you can do in the winter.

With the arrival of winter comes a drop in temperature and a fall of snow. These conditions can make it more difficult to leave the warmth of your home and other indoor areas. You can still enjoy nature and get some exercise with the right equipment and preparation, though. If you’re curious about the possibilities, take a look at these outdoor activities that you can do in the winter.

Snowshoeing

You may enjoy walking long distances on scenic trails at other times of the year. When snow is deep, however, you’ll probably need to find an alternative. Snowshoeing is the perfect activity in this case because it lets you hike without struggling to move forward as much as you would with regular boots or shoes. Traditional snowshoes resemble elongated tennis rackets, but more modern versions have metal frames with sheets of plastic filling out their middle portions. These quirky designs are highly practical, as they prevent the wearer from sinking into the snow. In addition to the shoes themselves, you’ll also need some snowshoe poles to help you keep your balance.

Camping

The natural landscape transforms with the seasons, and you may want to experience this firsthand through camping. This can seem intimidating, but if you layer your clothes properly, bring insulated sleeping bags, and have a way to start a fire, you can stay reasonably comfortable during the day. Warming yourself with a fire and some hot food and drinks can feel even more enjoyable while camping than it does indoors. At night, you may find alternatives to regular tents to stay safe as well. It’s possible to find established huts around snowshoeing and skiing areas that will protect you well. Alternatively, you can learn how to build a snow shelter.

Biking

Similar to camping, biking is an outdoor activity that you can do in the winter that seems overly challenging to attempt at first. In reality, riding a bicycle is still possible even when there’s snow on the ground. Again, you’ll need to have some layers of clothing to stay warm, which you can remove or add as needed. As for your bike, you could lower the tire pressure and add a fender to deal with the rougher terrain. There are also bikes that have special features to make riding in the winter easier. These have thicker tires with more traction and are usually known as fat bikes because of the fat look of their tires. Pedaling can become harder with these, but you can find electric bikes with fat tires as well. These will help you move with onboard motors.
