Clearfield Tops Punxsutawney in Non-League Play, 66-35

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The final week of the regular season for the Clearfield Bison basketball squad ultimately is a short one.  After having to play on Saturday, there was little time over the weekend to prepare for Monday’s contest on the road against the Punxsutawney Chucks.

Of the four previous non-league games for the Bison, they won three of them.  After Monday, that increased to being 4-for-5 as the visiting Bison used a strong second half push to achieve the 66-35 victory, their fourth in a row.

Both the Bison and the Chucks came out slow in the opening quarter, but it was Clearfield holding a slim three-point advantage after the first eight minutes.  But Clearfield turned up the pressure in the second quarter, as their fast-paced offense put up 15 points, while holding the Chucks at bay on the opposing side of the court, going into halftime with a 24-14 advantage.

The toughest quarter for the Bison at certain points this year has been the third quarter, but this night was much different.

Clearfield put up more points in the third quarter when the teams swapped ends of the court.  Fresh off surpassing the 1000-point mark just two days ago, Cade Walker put up seven of his game-high 16 points in the third quarter, accounting for a third of the Bison offensive output in the quarter, as Clearfield added 19 points in the third to take a 43-25 lead into the final quarter.

Walker added in seven rebounds with his 16 points, while Karson Rumsky came in just behind his teammate with six boards.  Cole Miller also hit double figures for Clearfield, adding in 15 points, all from three-point range, coming off the bench.  Andrew Lopez led the Bison in assists with six.

Clearfield’s highest output in points came in the fourth quarter, as the visitors tallied 23 in the final eight minutes, with the final 10 courtesy of a pair of deep shots from Kandyn Hudson and a pair of jumpers from Nasheed Thompson.

For Punxsutawney, Daron Byers led the Chucks with 11 points, as no other player made it into double figures.

Clearfield (13-8) closes out the regular season on Thursday night against the same team they opened the 2019-2020 season against, the Curwensville Golden Tide.  That game back on December 6 resulted in Clearfield’s highest scoring output of the season in an 82-31 rout inside Patton Hall.  This time, the two squads play in the Bison Gymnasium, with tip off at 6 p.m. for junior varsity.

Varsity will tip off following Senior Night festivities, approximately 7:30 p.m.
