Bison Cagers Pull Off Overtime Thriller Against P-O

PHILIPSBURG — Those that made the trip to Philipsburg to see the latest chapter in the rivalry between Philipsburg-Osceola and Clearfield were in for a treat inside the P-O Area High School gym.  The hardwood was hot for this Mountain League contest, and both squads did not disappoint.

In fact, 32 minutes was not enough to decide it, and these two squads gave the fans an extra quarter of play.  But, it was the fourth quarter and overtime defense that allowed the Bison to pull off the come-from-behind 49-45 thrilling victory.

It wasn’t looking good to start the night as the Bison had trouble guarding Ryan Whitehead, who was scoring almost at will through the first two quarters.  Whitehead would hit nine from the floor, accounting for 18 of the team’s 27 points in the first half.  After one quarter, the Bison found themselves behind by five, but things quickly changed.

The second quarter saw the Bison reel in the opposition, putting down 14 points in the stanza to just find itself just down one heading into the locker room.

When the second half began, it was all about control and contesting shots.  That seemed to work as after Whitehead’s 18 points in the opening half, he was held to just five in the remaining minutes.  By contrast, Clearfield was spreading the ball around between its main guys, as Cade Walker and Karson Rumsky chipped in key points in the third quarter to take a 40-39 advantage into the final quarter.

That fourth quarter was highly contested as neither team had strong offense, combining for just seven points.  But, defensively, the Bison were in it and making it hard for P-O to hit the net.  After 32 minutes, the score was knotted at 43-all, and another four minutes would decide it.

The extra stanza was a shut-down run for Clearfield, as they held P-O to just one field goal, while the Bison added in a field goal and four free throws, two each from Walker and Matt Pallo, to secure the thrilling victory.

Three Bison cagers were in double figures, as Walker added in 14 points plus seven boards, while Rumsky and Luke Winters each added in 12.  Andrew Lopez led the Bison with seven assists.

Clearfield (9-6) can savor the victory for a while as they are back in action on Wednesday night at home against Tyrone, tip off at 6 p.m. for jayvee, and varsity to follow.
