CURWENSVILLE – Many fans inside Curwensville High School‘s Patton Hall on Friday night expected a fairly even girls basketball game between visiting Clearfield and Curwensville.
It was anything but even, as the Lady Bison won every aspect of the game in a convincing 49-16 romp over the Lady Tide.
The win for the Lady Bison was number two (2-5) on the year while the loss has Curwensville below .500 at 2-3.
Head coach Joe Castagnolo of Clearfield said after the game, “Everything just seemed to click tonight, we shot well, we rebounded well, we just played well. We had been struggling until tonight so hopefully we are over that rough stretch.”
Clearfield jumped out to a quick 8-0 lead on two buckets each from Olivia Bender and Emma Hipps before the Lady Tide picked up two free throws from Alyssa Bakaysa.
The Lady Bison would go on to score another five points before the first eight minutes was over. Unfortunately for the Lady Tide they would not score, trailing 13-2 going into the second quarter.
And it was just as good for Clearfield in the second, outscoring their hosts 13-0 to take a seemingly insurmountable, which it was, lead, 26-2, into the break.
For Clearfield, it was just steady play throughout the first 16 minutes with Bender, nine points, and Hipps with eight paving the way. On the other end though it was Curwensville with just two points, both on free throws at the 4:37 mark of the first quarter.
Curwensville head coach Bob Desmett, to say the least, was surprised, commenting, “I truly thought this would be a close game tonight on our home floor. I am just lost for words at this point. We certainly have played better basketball. We shot terrible, and just played terrible.”
The third quarter was just like the first two, with Clearfield winning that eight minute stretch 10-2 in a quarter were the Lady Tide didn’t hit its first field goal of the night until the 7:50 point of the third on a basket by Hannah Condon.
So after three it was 36-4 in favor of the Lady Bison. All that was left was to clear the benches in the fourth in this unexpected blowout.
Clearfield won that frame also, 13-12.
Bakasya helped the Lady Tide with six fourth quarter points and was leading point maker for Curwensville on the night with eight tallies.
The Lady Bison had balanced scoring as Hipps had a game high 13 points with Bender scoring 11 and Tesa Miller chipping in with 10.
Castagnolo finished by saying, “We executed perfectly tonight with our press that created turnovers. This was a great team effort and it was nice to have all 11 girls play.”
And for coach Desmett he closed with “I thought we had turned the corner on this type of performance.”
Clearfield also won the junior varsity game over the Lady Tide 48-15. High scorers for the Lady Bison were Kirstie Van Tassel with 13 and Abby Ryan with 10. Desaray Cossar had five for the Tide.
Curwensville will travel to DuBois Central Catholic on Thursday for its next game with the junior varsity game starting at 6 pm and the varsity to immediately follow.
The Lady Bison are off until next Friday when they host the Lady Chucks of Punxsutawney with a 6 pm varsity tip-off.
Next Friday night at Clearfield High School will be a girls/boys varsity doubleheader with the Clearfield-Punxsy
girls, as mentioned above, starting at 6 pm, then to be followed by the Clearfield-Otto Eldred boys game.
It will also be a very special broadcast evening for listeners of WOKW-FM, 102.9, as the station will carry the complete doubleheader. The pre-game show will begin at 5:50 pm
