CURWENSVILLE – The Clearfield High School boys basketball team took a short trip to Curwensville Friday night to open the 2019-20 season at the Tide’s Patton Hall and without question did not disappoint its fans in an 82-31 opening night victory.
For Bison Head Coach Nate Glunt, he liked what he saw on some fronts, saying, “We were fundamentally good at times and I was very happy with how we played defensively. Our guys rebounded very well tonight and really didn’t have a lot of turnovers, so I was happy to see that.”
Matt Wassil, Curwensville’s mentor, even in the lopsided defeat saw some good, commenting, “I felt we played a really good first four minutes of the game, then they took over, keeping their intensity while we couldn’t keep ours. I did like the effort of our guys even when the game got out of hand.”
The Bison jumped out to an early 8-3 lead on a Cade Walker two pointer with six minutes to play in the first quarter then built a 10-point edge with four to play in the first quarter on a bucket by Matt Pallo.
Curwensville sophomore Ty Terry had two three-pointers in the opening eight minutes but his squad still trailed after one, 22-10.
The middle two quarters were great for Clearfield, while they were somewhat of a disaster for the Golden Tide.
Clearfield outscored the Tide 24-4 in the second to take a more than commanding 46-14 halftime lead and then pushed it to 67-18 after three periods by outscoring Curwensville 21-4 in the third.
With 4:33 to play in the third period Walker’s two point basket brought on the 40 point mercy rule at 57-17.
The two teams played a pretty close fourth quarter with Clearfield winning that eight minute stretch 15-13.
Walker led all scorers with 24 points followed by 18 from teammate Karson Rumsky. The Golden Tide offense was paced by Scott Condon who tallied 12.
Of course Glunt saw some things that need improved upon, “We missed a lot of three point attempts this evening and our foul shooting (6-17) certainly needs some work.”
As for Wassil, he closed saying, We need to be more careful handling the ball for sure and limit out turnovers. Obviously we have to play better, no doubt about that.”
Clearfield also knocked off Curwensville in the junior varsity game by a score of 61-14. Cole Miller had 12 for the Bison while Landon Swatsworth scored six for the Tide.
Next up for the Bison will be a trip to Bald Eagle Area on Tuesday in a Mountain League battle with tip off at 7:30 pm.
The Tide will be back at home in a Moshannon Valley League encounter on Wednesday versus the Moshannon Valley Black Knights. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 pm.
