Brockway Dumps Golden Tide 35-15 In Season Finale

BROCKWAY – It was two teams looking to close out the 2019 High School Football Season with a win following tough years for both squads.

In the end the Brockway Rovers took care of business Friday night, downing the Golden Tide of Curwensville 35-15 on the Rovers’ home field.

Senior quarterback Jon Wood of Brockway had a huge night with over 300 yards of total offense, two touchdown passes and two rushing TDs in the Rover victory. Wood was 13 of 19 passing for 172 yards and also rushed 23 times for 159 yards.

Brockway ended the year at 3-7 while the Tide finished 1-8 under first year head coach Jimmy Thompson.

The Rovers took the opening kickoff and marched 55 yards for the game’s first score, a one yard run by Connor Ford, with Lewis Painter adding the extra pint at the 8:54 mark of the opening frame.

Brockway would increase its margin to 14-0 at 11:51 of the second quarter on a Wood 20 yard touchdown toss to Ford as Lewis was good on the PAT.

Stretching its lead to 21-0, Brockway’s Wood connected on an 18 yard TD pass to Braidon Smith with 5:42 to go before halftime. Painter again added the extra point.

Curwensville tried to make a game out of it as senior running back Zack Holland scored on a 52 yard run, breaking several tackles along the way to find pay dirt, with 4:35 before the halftime break. Quarterback Daniel McGarry ran in the two point conversion attempt and the Tide were still alive, trailing 21-8 at the intermission.

Curwensville received the second half kick-off, only to be stopped in its own territory, which the Rovers would eventually take advantage of.

Wood scored his first rushing touchdown of the contest with 4:30 left in the third quarter on a seven yard scamper as Painter added the PAT making the score 28-8 after three quarters.

Brockway would ice the game with just 6:53 to play in the fourth on a 51 yard run by Wood, with Painter once again good with the PAT.

Junior running back Duane Brady of Curwensville helped the Tide end the season on a positive note, scoring from the six yard line with 1:36 left on the clock. Jacob Mullins added the PAT setting the final at 35-15 in favor of the Rovers.

Brady crossed the century mark for the game with 113 yards on 17 carries. Holland finished with 67 yards.

Smith had two interceptions for the Brockway defense as the Rovers defeated the Tide for the ninth time in the last 11 meetings. The win by Brockway evens the all-time series at 11 wins apiece.
