CURWENSVILLE – One new head football coach would get the first win of their career when Curwensville hosted Cameron County in week two of the 2019 season.
And it was Jimmy Thompson of the Golden Tide getting his initial victory with a 20-0 shutout of the Red Raiders at newly named “Coach Andy Evanko Stadium” in Curwensville Friday night.
Neither offense responded much in a first half which was plagued by sloppy play and numerous penalties, mostly in the second quarter.
However, Curwensville broke the scoreless battle with just 10 seconds left to play before the break on a Daniel McGarry 41 yard touchdown strike to junior wideout Jake McCracken. The extra point attempt was blocked. McCracken finished the night with three catches for 79 yards.
The TD pass came on a third down and 10 as the Tide showed persistence in the air game on the possession.
On the first two plays of the scoring drive the Tide had wide open receivers that got behind the Red Raider defense on the right side of the secondary only to have both pass attempts come up incomplete.
But the persistence in the passing game paid off as Curwensville went to the left side on third down as McCracken came up with the catch down the left hash mark and broke a few tackles to score the first touchdown of the year for the Golden Tide.
After the blocked point after attempt, it was the Tide in front 6-0 going in to halftime.
Curwensville would score two more TDs, one in the third and another in the fourth, in the second half to give the Golden Tide a win at home.
Tide running back Duane Brady found the end zone at the 4:46 point of the third quarter on a two yard dive and the extra point by Jacob Mullins made it 13-0 heading into the final 12 minutes. Brady was the leading rusher for the Tide, with 77 yards on 20 carries.
Thad Butler also had a nice evening on the ground with 67 yards on just six rushes.
The final score of the evening came on another McGarry to McCracken pass with just 2:55 to play. This time it was a 35 yard toss with Mullins then adding the PAT.
The freshman McGarry finished five of 14 with 103 yards passing to go along with his two touchdown passes and two interceptions.
Curwensville had three interceptions in the game with McCracken, Ty Terry and Andrew Freyer each coming up with one pick.
Gannon Horning had two interceptions for Cameron County (0-1), playing its first game under new head coach Ryan Newman. The Red Raiders had a bye in week one.
The Tide (1-1) are on the road next Friday, visiting Union/AC Valley, for a 7 pm kick-off. In 2018, at Curwensville, the Golden Tide edged the Falcon-Knights 14-13.
The Falcon-Knights (0-1) play at Sheffield on Saturday at 1:30 pm in week two action.
