Loss to Marion Center Leaves Chiefs in Second Place

MARION CENTER — The Jefferson County League regular season ended on a sour note for the Clearfield American Legion Post 6 baseball team as three leads went by the boards in a 7-5 loss to Marion Center Thursday morning.

The setback locked the Chiefs into second place behind Punxsutawney, which claimed the title with a 10-2 record.

The Chiefs finished 8-3 with their third  game against Marion Center being cancelled.

They will open the JCL’s championship playoffs with a winner’s bracket semifinal home game at the Lawrence Township Recreation Park Tuesday, the first pitch set for 6 p.m.

Tyler Howells limited the Chiefs to three hits in pitching Marion Center to jut its second win in its first JCL season. He struck out two, walked three and hit two.

Clearfield (10-4-1) went ahead in its first three-at bats, but the hosts answered every time.

The teams matched singletons in the first two innings, the Chiefs going up on a sacrifice fly by Eli Glass that drove in Hayden Williams in the first and jumping in front 2-1 on Matt Bailor’s triple and Hunter Dixon’s grounder in the second.

They broke the second tie with their last three runs in the third after Howells had walked Kyle Elensky, hit Glass and walked Seth Bumbarger. Morgen Billotte, Blake Prestash and Bailor earned RBIs with ground balls.

Marion Center responded with four runs off Williams to grab the lead for good, 6-5, with Malachi Pugh’s two-run single capping the rally.

Clayton Coble, Marcus Badzik and Brandon Gaston had two hits apiece for the winners.

Williams was the losing hurler, allowing five hits and five earned runs in his three-inning stint. Elensky gave up two hits and one run in a three-inning relief outing.
