DUBOIS — A terrific mound duel between Hunter Dixon of Clearfield and Dayne Bauman of DuBois was decided by an unearned run in the 2019 Jefferson County Legion Baseball League opener at Showers Field Sunday evening.
The hurlers matched three-hitters with Bauman emerging as the winner of the 2-1 thriller.
He had one strikeout and three walks.
Dixon was even more impressive with six strikeouts and one free pass.
The hosts turned Chandler Ho’s leadoff single and stolen base into a first-inning run via a single by Eric Schneider and a groundout by Jordan Frano.
In the next inning, Jeremy Krise doubled and scored what proved to be the winning run on an error.
DuBois had the bases loaded when Dixon induced a flyout to escape the jam, and the left-handed proceeded to retire 12 of 13 batters over the last four innings.
The John Lewis Shade Post 6’s Chiefs broke up Bauman’s shutout in the fourth frame on a sacrifice fly by Allan Myers after Seth Bumbarger walked and Eli Glass doubled.
Myers had the other two hits for the Chiefs.
Clearfield’s home opener at the Bison Sports Complex will be Tuesday against Punxsutawney or Thursday against Curwensville. It hinges on the outcome of the Punxsutawney Area High School team’s PIAA Class AAAA Tournament game Monday.
