DUBOIS — Sophomore utilityman Zane Morgan (Clearfield) and freshman first baseman Seth Bumbarger (Clearfield) had run-scoring hits and freshman pitcher Jake Sorbera (Clearfield) worked one scoreless inning as Penn State DuBois defeated Ohio State-Mansfield 9-4 at Showers Field Wednesday evening in a tune-up for this week’s United States Collegiate Athletic Association Championships.
Morgan clubbed his second home run of the season and also scored twice, while Bumbarger singled for his RBI.
Sorbera (1-1) logged two strikeouts and allowed one hit. He walked two batters and hit one.
Sophomore outfield Thayne Morgan (Clearfield) had a stolen base, his 23rd in 25 attempts, and scored a run.
Junior pitcher Brandon Orsich (Clearfield) is the fifth former Clearfield Area High School Bison that will be trying to help the Pennsylvania State University Athletic Conference champion Lions defend their 2018 USCAA crown.
Penn State DuBois (28-12) is seeded No. 3 for the USCAA Small College World Series and will play No. 6 seed Southern Maine Community College (29-7) in a 6:30 p.m. quarterfinal that is the fifth of six games scheduled at Showers Field Monday.
Preliminary round action will pit No. 8 Penn State Mont Alto against No. 9 Selma (Ala.) University at 8:30 a.m. and No. 7 Bryant & Stratton Albany (N.Y.) against No. 10 Bluefield (W.Va.) State College at 11.
In the other quarterfinals, No. 4 Wright State (Ohio) Lake Campus meets No. 5 Mississippi University for Women at 1:30 p.m., No. 1 Apprentice (Va.) School gets the PS Mont Alto-Selma winner at 4 and No. 2 University of Cincinnati Clermont College plays the Bryant & Stratton-Bluefield State winner at 9.
The double-elimination tourney runs through Thursday, with two of Tuesday’s six games booked for City Park Field.
Orsich and Thayne Morgan were two of the six Penn State DuBois players named USCAA Academic All-Americans at the pre-tourney luncheon in the DuBois Country Club Sunday.
Four Lions were selected to the 2019 USCAA All-American Team that also was announced during the luncheon.
Senior second baseman Brandon Gettig (Bald Eagle) made the first team, freshman infielder-first baseman Isaac Stouffer (Punxsutawney) and sophomore infielder-pitcher Toner Corl (Central Mountain) are on the second team and senior utilityman-pitcher Garrett Brown (DuBois) received honorable mention.

MANSFIELD — Slippery Rock sophomore Ethan McGinnis (Clearfield) placed 13th in the triple jump at the 2019 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships hosted by Mansfield University last week.
McGinnis hopped, skipped and jumped 12.45 meters (40 feet, 10¼ inches) at the Van Norman Complex.
The Rock finished second in the 12-team meet for the fifth year in a row with 114 points.
Shippensburg amassed 145.5 points to claim the team title for the 11th consecutive year.
