Curwensville Baseball Turned Back by Moshannon Valley

HOUTZDALE — After having to wait out weather all week, and having seven days since their last contest, the Curwensville Golden Tide finally got to hit the diamond on Friday afternoon.

A 4:30 start for the Tide came on the road in Houtzdale against the Black Knights of Moshannon Valley.

Each team got all their scores in one inning, and for the Tide it was the one inning that made a difference.  Moshannon Valley took charge in the bottom of the third to secure the 5-1 victory, dropping Curwensville to 3-11 on the season.

Starting pitcher for the Black Knights, freshman Michael Kitko, gave up his lone run in the top of the third inning.  With Jake Mullins on second, following his single to left field and a stolen base, Jake McCracken stepped to the batter’s box and blasted a 1-2 pitch deep to the right field wall to bring forth an RBI-single and put Curwensville ahead with just one out on the board.

In the bottom of the third, however, the Tide saw that lead evaporate.

Jeremiah Farley got the start for Curwensville, and saw his first two innings go without much trouble.  Then, he and the Tide defense struggled.  The inning started out well for Farley, as he saw a line out and ground out put two away to get things going.

Then, Michael Kephart reached first on an error by Noah Von Gunden, Alex Kitko then singled to put runners on first and second.  Then, helping his own cause, Michael Kitko stepped to the plate and hammered a one-strike pitch over the second baseman to bring both runners to the plate for a two-RBI double, and putting the home squad in the lead.

Joseph Bacher then got into the extra-base party when he uncorked a hit straight to the wall between right and center field, bringing Michael Kitko home and increasing the lead to 3-1.

Bacher then decided to take the ultimate risk and successfully stole home while Ethan Webb was at bat.  The final run of the inning came in unearned fashion as Webb made it home thanks to a fielding error by Cole Bressler.  All the scoring came in one inning, as the 5-1 gap stood for the rest of the contest.

Michael Kitko got his second win of the year after going six and two-thirds innings, striking out 10, and giving up the one earned run.  Farley dropped his record to 1-4 on the year in three innings of work, giving up five runs, all unearned, and two walks on the afternoon.

After being away from their own field for over a month, Curwensville finally will return home to face the West Branch Warriors on Monday.  First pitch at 4:15 p.m.
