Clearfield Girls Pin First Loss on Tyrone, 7-5

HYDE — Olivia Bender whacked three extra base hits, one a home run, to fuel a 12-hit attack that backed another strong outing in the circle by Emma Hipps as the Clearfield Area High School softball team knocked Tyrone from the unbeaten ranks with a 7-5 win at the Bison Sports Complex Thursday afternoon.

Bender drove in three runs and was credited with two runs, one actually scored by courtesy runner Alexis Benton, while Hipps hurled a four-hitter with 12 strikeouts against one of three Mountain League teams that had gotten off to perfect starts.

“I told them that’s a huge win,” Lady Bison coach Derek Danver said. “Emma pitched a great game again. She had only one earned run.”

His batterymates got a lot of help from the rest of the lineup on offense as eight Lady Bison contributed, with Lauren Ressler and Morgan Cheek rapping two singles apiece off Lady Eagle ace Cate Baran.

“That’s one of the top pitchers in the league, and we hit her well, even some of the ones we got out on,” Danver said. “We had a lot of hard line drives. We were seeing the ball really well.”

The Lady Bison bunched all of their hits in the three innings that they posted crooked numbers on the scoreboard.

They didn’t waste any time jumping on Baran, who struck out five and walked none.

Karly Rumsky laced a single to center, Kylee Hertlein beat out a bunt and Hipps bounced a one-hopper off the third baseman’s glove to fill the sacks for Bender, who unloaded a double to deep center field for two RBIs.

They almost had more, but right fielder Maecy Tuskovich speared Ressler’s wicked liner and turned it into a double play.

In the third inning, Clearfield strung together five consecutive hits with two outs to pad the lead to 5-0.

Bender provided the spark with her first career homer over the left center fence on her way to a perfect afternoon at the dish.

“She had a huge game,” Danver said. “She has been working hard and puts in the time. I’m expecting her to have more games like this one.”

Ressler and Kyra Mollura cracked singles to right and center, respectively, and both touched home when Casey English’s sharp grounder through the middle was misplayed in the outfield.

Tyrone took advantage of one of Clearfield’s five errors to slice the margin to 5-3 in the fourth frame. Ally Jones singled across one run and later scored on Maci Brodzina’s home run to left center.

The Lady Eagles did tie it up in the fifth on one of two walks allowed by Hipps, three miscues and Baran’s RBI single.

Danver brought his players together for the following message, “I told them, ‘Yeah, it’s a new game, but it’s 3-2. We still have three at-bats and they only have two, so it’s still our advantage right now. Let’s put a couple across and get back on top.’”

The Lady Bison did just that after Bender led off with a hit that bounced away from the fielder for a double. Benton replaced her at second base, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored the winning run on Ressler’s infield single.

Later, Cheek came through with a clutch two-out single up the middle to drive in the insurance marker.

“You’ve gotta give credit to the middle and bottom of our order,” Danver noted. “They were a big part in the runs we scored.”

Hipps set down the Lady Eagles in order in the sixth and replicated that in the seventh after Maddie Coleman bunted for a base hit.

“I want to compliment my assistant coach, Harlen Funk,” Danver said. “He took over the pitch calling, and he’s doing a great job.”

Danver was happy to see the Lady Bison avert letting the misplays affect them.

“We need to clean up a couple things defensively, but we didn’t let that get us down,” he said. “We left all that behind us and kept playing.”

The Lady Bison, 2-1 with a 1-1 ML record, will get another test against an undefeated league foe Saturday when they travel to the Philipsburg-Osceola diamond for a noon start in a game postponed from Monday.
