YOUNG TOWNSHIP – A Punxsutawney man has been accused of assaulting and then raping a woman.
Shawn Smith, 33, has been charged with rape; two counts each of aggravated assault, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, aggravated indecent assault and strangulation; sexual assault; persons not to possess firearm; and related offenses.
The charges stem from an assault that began 5 p.m. Friday and continued until 6 a.m. Saturday, according to a report issued by the Punxsutawney-based state police.
The victim – a 36-year-old woman from Punxsutawney – told investigating troopers that Smith took her from her residence in her vehicle.
She said he drove recklessly and made threats that they were both “going to die” that night. She said she made several attempts to exit the vehicle.
Smith grabbed her by her throat and “tried to break her neck.” He drove the vehicle to a residence on Timber Lane in Young Township, she told troopers.
Inside the home, he took her to the basement, where he allegedly threatened her with his shotgun. State police say Smith is a felon and not permitted to possess a firearm.
He allegedly got on top of her and began to choke her with both hands and twist her head, before he forcibly sexually assaulted her.
The victim was treated at the Punxsutawney Hospital for minor injuries and also had a sexual assault evaluation, according to the report.
State police obtained a search warrant and established a perimeter around the residence. Smith fled out the back but was apprehended by troopers.
Smith was subsequently lodged in Jefferson County Jail on the charges.
