Bison Wrestlers Rebound With Win Over Tyrone

HYDE — The Clearfield Bison wrestling team followed up their solid performance at the Tool City tournament with a resounding win over the visiting Tyrone Golden Eagles.

The Bison (2-4) won six out of the eight contested bouts to come away with the 51-21 victory. Tyrone (1-4) gave up four forfeits, while the Bison gave up two.

The match started at 152, where Bison senior Caleb Freeland (14-3) had six takedowns, but a late reversal by Alex Weaver (2-6) prevented a bonus win and as a results the hosts were out to an early 3-0 lead.

The Bison expanded their lead to 9-0 as freshman Mark McGonigal (12-4) was leading Golden Eagle Zack Lash (4-8) 9-2 in the second period when McGonigal flattened Lash at the 3:14 mark.

Tyrone got on the board at 170 when Thomas Hicks (8-7) was awarded a forfeit, as the Bison moved their next two wrestlers up a weight to compensate for regular 195 pounder Nick Domico (8-7) out of the line up.

At 182, the visitors took their lone lead of the match when Alec Reader (2-5) broke open a 2-2 tie with Cole Smay (3-8) by getting an escape, takedown, and fall 1:34 in to the match.

The Bison evened the dual meet at 12 apiece at 195 when Brett Zattoni (3-9) picked up his first dual meet win of the season with an 8-1 win over Anthony Dalesio (0-4).

Freshman Oliver Billotte (4-3) made a triumphant return to the resilite after missing a month due to injury at 220 as he gave the Bison the lead for good with a takedown and the fastest fall of the night in 1:16 over James Lewis (3-4).

After a scoreless first period, Bison senior Avry Gisewhite (8-8) went to work in the second by reversing off the bottom and quickly disposing of Parker Allen (1-3) 29 seconds in to the period.

As the match made the turn to the lightweights, the Bison had the Golden Eagles doubled up at 24-12.

Tyrone temporarily made it interesting as their 106 pounder, Ashton Sipes (6-5) picked up a forfeit at 106 and 113 pounder Hunter Walk (10-5) scored two points in each period to defeat Nolan Barr (7-6) 6-0 and make the team score 24-21 in favor of the Bison.

That was as close as the Golden Eagles would get as forfeits at 120 to Karson Kline (11-6) and to Luke Freeland (9-7) at 126 pretty much sealed the deal.

The deal was officially closed at 132 when Peyton Smay (3-8) narrowly defeated Mason Walls (4-5). Smay got the opening takedown, but an escape and takedown by Walls gave him a 3-2 lead at the first rest stop. Smay used his own escape and takedown in the second period to take a 5-3 lead in to the final period. Walls reversed off the bottom to knot the score at five all, but a Smay reversal with under 10 seconds remaining earned him the come-from-behind victory.

Bison Jude Pallo (6-3) at 138 and Micah Climie at 145 (1-3) each had their hand raised the easy way to set the final at 51-21.

The Bison will be back in action on Thursday evening when the welcome the Flying Dutch (1-2) of St. Marys to the Weiss.
