Bison Place Seven at 40th Annual Tool City Tourney

MEADVILLE — The Clearfield Bison wrestling team advanced 10 out of 11 wrestlers to the second day of the 40th Annual Tool City Tournament in Meadville, and seven out of those 10 managed to make it onto Saturday evening’s medal stand.

The Bison had four freshman place winners, led by Mark McGonigal’s runner-up at 160. The others were Luke Freeland’s fifth place at 126, Nolan Barr’s seventh at 113, and Karson Kline’s eighth at 120.

The other place winners were seniors Caleb Freeland, fifth at 145, and Avry Gisewhite, sixth at 285, and sophomore Nick Domico with his eighth place finish at 195.

The Bison improved by 16 points and one spot in the standings over last year’s team. They finished with 101.5 points to land in 13th place out of 25 teams. District 9’s Brockway edged Penns Valley for the team title, 178-176.

The Bison had three semifinalists on Saturday morning. McGonigal defeated Brockway’s Noah Bash 6-2 to reach his

first, of hopefully many, varsity championship finals match. Once there he was bested 11-0 by Nick Marcenelle, a junior from North Allegheny.

Luke Freeland (8-7) was defeated by Williamsport’s Carter Dawson 10-4, then split his two consolation matches to end up in fifth place, his final bout being a fall in 1:59 over Eisenhower’s Easton Headman.

Gisewhite (7-8) was pinned in 5:43 by Girard’s Jordan Schell in his semifinal bout, then dropped his two wrestleback matches to finish sixth. HIs consi-semifinal match was an 11-0 loss to former Bison teammate Trae Kitko, now a senior for Moshannon Valley.

Caleb Freeland, the Bison team leader in wins with 13 against three losses, matched his brother’s fifth place finish by winning two of three consolation bouts, then defeated Jack Ripma of Ft. LeBoeuf 7-1 in his final bout.

Barr (7-5) split his first two consolation bouts, the went on to major decision Olean’s Nate Gabler 13-0 in his seventh place bout. Karson (10-6) also won two out of three consolation matches to reach the seventh place finals, but was pinned by Riley Bower of Williamsport.

Sophomore Nick Domico (8-7) split his two consy round matches, then had to take a medical forfeit in his seventh place bout to Franklin’s Holden Cook.

Despite winning three matches at the tourney senior Jude Pallo (5-3) at 138 fell one win short of the medal round, as did Brett Zattoni (2-9) who won his first two matches of the season. 170 pounder Cole Smay (3-7) lost in the third round of consolations Saturday morning.

The Bison (1-4) return to dual meet action this week as they host Tyrone (1-3) on Tuesday and Saint Marys (1-2) on Thursday at the Weiss Gymnasium.
