PIKE TOWNSHIP – A 49-year-old Renovo man, William R. Scrimshaw, was killed in a motorcycle crash during the early-morning hours Sunday in Pike Township.
The crash occurred at 1:55 a.m. on the Curwensville – Tyrone Highway, north of Bloomington Avenue Extension, according to Clearfield-based state police.
Scrimshaw was traveling north when he lost control of his motorcycle while negotiating a left-hand curve in the roadway. It overturned onto its left side for unknown reasons.
Scrimshaw and his motorcycle continued traveling 33 feet in a northern direction off the eastern shoulder, striking a rocky embankment.
Upon impact, Scrimshaw traveled 51 feet north, coming to a rest in the northbound lane and lying face down. His motorcycle traveled approximately 82 feet north until coming to a rest.
Scrimshaw wasn’t wearing a protective helmet at the time of the crash. He was pronounced dead on-scene by Chief Deputy Coroner Gilbert Stevenson, state police say.
State police were assisted by the Curwensville Rescue Hose & Ladder Co. Fire and Ambulance, Clearfield County Coroner’s Office, towing services and Lamar-based state police.
State troopers from the Lamar barracks notified Scrimshaw’s next of kin at 4:15 a.m. Sunday.
