Chiefs Come From Behind To Edge Bucks 6-5 in 10

CLEARFIELD — Thayne Morgan sprinted home on twin brother Zane’s bunt with no outs in the bottom of the 10th inning to give the Clearfield American Legion baseball team a hard-earned 6-5 win over Curwensville at the Lawrence Township Recreation Park Friday evening.

The walk-off run was set up when Thayne Morgan drew a free pass, stole second and continued to third on a throwing error.

Then he beat the play at the plate on the bunt to the right side, completing the Chiefs’ comeback from an early 5-0 deficit in the Jefferson County League rematch of Thursday’s game which Clearfield won 15-2 in five innings.

The Bucks wasted no time showing there would not be a repeat, taking advantage of a misplay to post a run in the first inning on Hunter Hipps’ double and coming right back with four runs in the second.

The highlight was a three-run home run by Avery Francisco right after Caullin Reed had driven in a run with a single.

Hipps followed with a single, but Dixon registered one of his nine strikeouts that initiated a dominating stretch that extended through the eighth inning.

He retired 17 of the next 19 batters, including 14 in a row before Reed singled with one out in the eighth.

Dixon allowed eight hits and one walk.

Eli Glass relieved in the ninth and pitched two scoreless innings for the win, surrendering two hits and one walk and hitting one batter.

Clearfield (11-6, 4-3 JCL) got on the board against Hipps in the lower second, the RBIs recorded by Jake Sorbera with a sacrifice fly and Hayden Williams with a single.

Chase Graham gave the Bucks five good innings of relief, but the Chiefs were able to draw even on a run-scoring hit by Glass in the third and an RBI single by Sorbera after another run had scored on an error in the sixth.

Glass and Harrison Peacock had two hits apiece for the Chiefs, while Francisco collected three and Reed and Hipps each had a pair for the Bucks.

Clearfield will go to DuBois for a doubleheader Sunday, with the first pitch set for 1 p.m.
