ELKINS, W.Va. — After watching a 6-0 lead go by the boards in the top of the seventh inning, the Clearfield American Legion baseball team wound up with an 8-7 walk-off win over Moorefield (W.Va.) at the Elkins High School Field Saturday afternoon in its 28th Annual Pizza Hut Hillbilly Hardball Classic finale.
The John Lewis Shade Post 6 Chiefs finished 3-2 in the Orange Division of the tournament that attracted 29 teams from five states. All but eight were either legion or junior entries.
The Chiefs capped their first appearance when a throwing error on Harrison Peacock’s sacrifice bunt allowed Allan Myers and Jake Sorbera to score. Myers had led off with a double, and Sorbera drew a walk after Hayden Baldwin relieved Moorefield starter Jake Mauzy.
Nate Barr was the winning pitcher, making his mound debut for the Chiefs with the bases loaded and two outs during the Moorefield rally. He gave up a three-run double to Chase Ault before logging a strikeout.
A pair of Clearfield miscues got Reese Wilson in trouble after he had hurled six shutout innings with seven strikeouts in his first career start.
He surrendered his fifth and sixth hits and, one out later, departed after issuing his seventh free pass with the score 6-2.
Zane Morgan came on to record the second out but walked in two runs before Barr was summoned.
The Chiefs had pecked away at Mauzy for a seemingly comfortable advantage going to the last inning.
A sacrifice fly by Eli Glass chased Thayne Morgan home in the third, singles by Seth Bumbarger, Peacock and Hayden Williams made it 2-0 in the fourth and Bryce Timko singled and scored on an error in the fifth.
Glass doubled the lead with his second home run in as many days after Thayne Morgan and Barr had singled with two outs in the sixth.
Glass’ four RBIs upped his five-game total to 10. He was 8-for-13 at the plate with two doubles in addition to the two homers and scored nine runs.
Clearfield (4-2) will return to Jefferson County League play Monday with a home game against DuBois at 6 p.m.
Orange Division Final Standings — Circleville (Ohio) 4-1, Clearfield 3-2, Columbia (Md.) 3-2, Garrett County (Md.) 3-2, Beckley (W.Va.) 1-4, Moorefield (W.Va.) 1-4.
Circleville advanced to Sunday’s six-team playoffs as the No. 1 seed but lost 12-10 to Lexington (Ky.) Bluegrass Xpress, which then defeated Morgantown (W.Va.) Legion 12-1 in its third game of the day to claim the championship.
