BEA’s Peters Quiets Lady Bison Bats Again in 7-1 Win

HYDE — It’s long been said that good pitching will beat good hitting in diamond sports, and that played out again at the Bison Sports Complex Friday afternoon.

The Clearfield Area High School softball team, sporting a gaudy .369 batting average, was shut down for the second time in seven days by Bald Eagle Area freshman Madison Peters in a 7-1 Mountain League loss.

The Lady Bison were held to three hits, one less than they had in a 14-4 setback at Wingate last Saturday. Those are their two lowest totals of the season.

Peters had eight strikeouts and zero walks in that six-inning game, and the right-hander posted identical numbers in the rematch, with seven of the whiffs coming the first time through the Clearfield batting order.

To their credit, the Lady Bison were able to put the ball in play over the last four innings, but the Lady Eagles were solid defensively, specifically right fielder Megan Kresovich with a diving catch on Makayla Ross’ fly ball in the fourth fame and shortstop Brooke Woodward’s stop and throw for an out on Aspen Bishop’s hard grounder in the hole in the seventh.

Clearfield’s run was unearned because of an error on Kate Lansberry’s infield hit in the fifth. She advanced to second on the errant throw, moved to third on Lindsay Hand’s bunt and scored on a wild pitch.

Lady Bison hurlers Abby Fedder and Erica Hanes allowed just three earned runs while striking out eight and walking three. Hanes registered five of the strikeouts and gave up two hits in the last three innings.

Hanes relieved after Woodward doubled home Kresovich for a 4-0 lead with no outs in the fifth inning. She issued two walks in the seventh and would have escaped unscathed but for a two-out miscue that let in one run. Mackenzie McCloskey and Tobi Garrison followed with run-scoring singles.

BEA (11-3, 9-3 ML) continued a trend of putting up crooked numbers in their first at-bats.

Lacee Barnhart singled off Fedder’s glove and Morgan Lucas roped a single to left field. With one out, Yarrison reached on a misplay that allowed Barnhart to score. Lucas crossed the plate when Brianna Dyke, courtesy running for Yarrison, was caught in a rundown

Yarrison led off the fourth with the first of her two hits and moved around the sacks on a groundout, a flyout and a wild pitch.

The Lady Bison, 4-8 in the league and 6-9 overall, will play Penns Valley at Spring Mills Monday.
