Scarlet Dragons Nip Bison 4-3 With Run in Seventh

MARTINSBURG — For the second time in less than 24 hours, the Clearfield Area High School baseball team was on the wrong end of a Mountain League game that ended in walk-off fashion Saturday.

With the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, Noah Muthler trotted to the plate when Preston Karstetter was hit by a Reese Wilson pitch to give Central a 4-3 win.

Shut out for five innings by Jacob Eberlin and down 3-0, the Bison scored all of their runs in the top of the sixth frame.

Eli Glass led off with his second double, Seth Bumbarger walked and Jake Sorbera reached base on the lone Scarlet Dragon error.

Then, Ty Bender came through with a two-run double and, after Jason Ferry relieved for Central (5-7, 4-5 ML), Harrison Peacock had a sacrifice fly.

Clearfield (6-3, 4-3) sandwiched two outs around singles by Muthler and Hunter Klotz and a walk to Brady Nicewonger before Karstette stepped to the plate in the lower seventh.

Bender, Bumbarger and Nate Barr joined Glass in the two-hit column for the Bison.

Jordan Bowman, the No. 9 batter, had a pair of run-scoring doubles for the Scarlet Dragons.

Glass, who had not given up an earned run in 19-2/3 innings, pitched into the fifth before being lifted because of the pitch count. He gave up only three hits and three runs, all earned, while striking out two batters, walking two and hitting one.

Wilson entered with no outs and two runners aboard and immediately logged the first of his four strikeouts, but his wild pitch allowed Bowman to score Central’s third run.

The senior right-hander surrendered three hits and two walks in his 2-2/3 innings, taking the loss in his first decision for the Bison.

Clearfield will be back at home Monday to play Tyrone in the first of four games in as many days.
