SLIPPERY ROCK — Freshman sprinter/jumper Ethan McGinnis (Clearfield) posted personal-bests in both the triple jump and the long jump during Slippery Rock’s two meets last week.

He improved his triple jump mark to 13.15 meters (43 feet, 1½ inches) for fourth place in the 15-team Slippery Rock Open Thursday and leaped 6.22 meters (20 feet, 5 inches) to place fifth in the long jump at the Penn State Behrend Invitational at Erie Saturday.

McGinnis already had surpassed the qualifying standard for the 2018 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships with a 13.1-meter (43-feet, ¼-inch) effort for sixth place in the season-opening Coastal Carolina Invitational at Myrtle Beach, S.C., in early March.

He also covered 5.76 meters (18 feet, 10¾ inches) for 20th place in the long jump and ran the second leg for The Rock’s ‘A’ 4×200 relay foursome that finished eighth in 1:32.66.

The following weekend, The Rock competed in the Alan Connie Shamrock Invitational at the Costal Carolina complex, and McGinnis tripled jumped 12.73 meters (41 feet, 9¼ inches) for 13th place and carried the baton on the second leg for the SRU ‘B’ 4×200 relay team that wound up 11th in 1:31.66.

In the California University Early Bird Invitational March 24, McGinnis placed 12th in the 200-meter sprint in 23.97 seconds and 15th in the long jump at 5.95 meters (19 feet, 6¼ inches).

He finished ninth in the triple jump at 13.05 meters (42 feet, 9¾ inches) and 28th in the long jump at 6.15 meters (20 feet, 2¼ inches) at the Westminster Invitational April 14.

BASEBALL

MONACA — Freshman outfielder Thayne Morgan (Clearfield) singled, doubled, drove in a run and scored two in his 11th start as Penn State DuBois capped a three-game sweep of Penn State Beaver with a 12-4 win Sunday afternoon.

He also registered his ninth stolen base in 10 attempts.

The Lions, who recorded an 11-0 shutout in the first game, won the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference series opener 6-0 at home Saturday.

Last Wednesday, they wrapped up their third PSUAC West Division title in a row with a wild 11-inning 14-13 victory over Penn State Allegheny at Showers Field.

Clayton Butler’s two-out solo home run tied the game at 10-10 in the bottom of the ninth inning forcing extra innings, and Penn State DuBois rallied for four runs, the last two on a walk-off single by Joey DiPietro (Punxsutawney).

The Lions finished 14-1 in the PSUAC West and went into the final week of the regular season at 24-7.
