Clearfield Commissioners: Irvona Bridge Needs Permanent Repairs

CLEARFIELD – A bridge in Irvona is in need of permanent repairs.

At Tuesday’s county meeting, Commissioner John A. Sobel, chair, said inspectors closed the Hopkins Street Bridge last week due to serious safety concerns.

He said several households were “cut off” from leaving their area and there wasn’t access to the water treatment facility. He said since then, there’s been a temporary repair and it’s open for traffic.

Sobel said county officials have been engaged with PennDOT and Irvona officials. He said they’ve also alerted local state officials and asked Lisa Kovalick, community development specialist, to assist with finding emergency funding for the permanent repair.

Commissioner Mark B. McCracken added that it was important to engage state officials to get the bridge on their radar and for help with funding sources since Irvona is such a small municipality.
