Clearfield School Board Addresses Several Items on Agenda

CLEARFIELD – On Monday night, the Clearfield school board passed several items discussed during the committee meeting last week and some additional items added to the agenda.

Board member Gail Ralston asked about a policy concerning field trips. She said they had denied a field trip for the basketball boosters, but had intended to meet and construct a policy for future field trips, but the discussion never took place.

She suggested a policy needed to be created to make decisions fair for everyone.

Member Michael Spencer said the decision at that time was made because the booster club is not a school-sponsored club but agreed a policy needs to be created.

After some discussion, Business Director Sam Maney suggested the board work on a policy during the coming months and enact it at the beginning of the 2018-19 school year and not mid-school year.

Revisions to the 2017-18 calendar were approved accounting for snow days, as was the calendar for 2018-19, which will begin Aug. 27 and conclude May 31, 2019.

The program of studies for 2018-19 was discussed extensively. As part of the required classes for graduation, students will be expected to complete a certain number of social studies classes.

However, students in the Clearfield County Career & Technology Center programs will be required to complete fewer classes.

The board members discussed extensively the requirements and equality of education for the different students. Eventually board President Larry Putt said a solution would not be found that night, but it was something they would continue to work on and discuss. When voting on the matter, Ralston was the only dissenting vote.

New items included a vote to reject any and all bids on the old administration/maintenance building and to re-advertise for bids with no reserve and including the Girard-Goshen school building.
