DUBOIS – The Sandy Township Supervisors will move forward with an elder cottage ordinance.
However, it was noted that language was revised from a “manufactured building” to a “re-locatable building.”
The supervisors wanted the language to specifically state that an elder cottage must be moveable.
Elder Cottages are similar to tiny homes for seniors. The homes are located near a relative but allow seniors to have some independence.
The supervisors were concerned that the process would not be complete in time for a local resident, Don Robertson, to qualify for a grant.
Robertson first approached Sandy Township in hopes of getting an elder cottage for his father-in-law.
The ordinance will be considered at the March 5 township meeting. If approved, Robertson would need to apply for a conditional use permit.
It would need to be approved by the planning commission. If approved, it would be scheduled for a public hearing and then the supervisors would consider approval of the permit.
Officials said that the earliest this could happen would be March 19.
