Outstanding Defense Key for Bison in 57-41 Victory

STRATTANVILLE — Jon Gates poured in a career-high 23 points and Reese Wilson registered a double-double with a career-high 20 points and 10 rebounds as the Clearfield Area High School boys basketball team shut down the high-scoring Clarion-Limestone Lions 57-41 in a non-league game Monday night.

The loss was only the second in 11 games for the hosts, who were riding an eight-game winning streak and averaging 69.7 points, having posted more than 70 on five occasions.

But the Bison were up to the challenge defensively, holding the Lions to single figures in three quarters and outrebounding them 34-21 en route to their third win in a row.

Gates, whose average was 6.8 ppg, got off to a hot start with nine points, including two of his four 3-pointers, as Clearfield (6-5) bolted to a 17-6 lead.

Clarion-Limestone regrouped to climb back into it with a 23-point outburst in the second period to trim the deficit to 31-29 by halftime.

Behind eight more points from Gates, the Bison widened the gap to 43-36 going to the final quarter and held off the Lions by sinking 10 of 14 foul shots. Wilson was clutch with four of the free throws and eight of the Bison’s 14 points.

Cade Walker matched Wilson’s 10 rebounds and had three of Clearfield’s six steals.

The Bison held the Lions’ duo of junior Ian Callen and sophomore Deion Deas to 15 points, 18 under their combined averages. Callen, who had two triple-doubles and seven double-doubles while building an 18.1 average, did top the Lions with 13 points while Deas, who had been scoring at a 16.4 clip, was held to just one field goal.

Freshman Hayden Callen added 10 points in a losing cause.

The Bison, 6-5 halfway through their schedule, will will travel again Tuesday for a Mountain League game on the Philipsburg-Osceola hardwood.
