Eagles Soar Over Bison in 40-30 Home Opener Loss

CLEARFIELD – The Bison lost their home opener against Bald Eagle Tuesday night 40-30, and begin their season 0-1.

The match began in traditional style at 106, where freshman Angelo Maines (1-4) was decked by Cooper Gilham in 1:32 of the first period.

113 didn’t go any better, as junior John Thomas (2-4) was reversed by Garrett Giedroc into a spread eagle and pinned in 1:53.

Down 12-0 after two bouts, Clearfield finally put points on the board in a gut-check overtime victory by sophomore Peyton Smay (1-2) over Drake Holderman. Down 5-0 after the 1st period, Smay notched a takedown early in the second period, and then in the 3rd period he recorded three more takedowns. It only took Smay 10 seconds of overtime to capitalize on a bad shot by Holderman, spinning behind him for the winning takedown.

At 126, senior Matt Ryan (4-0) was quickly taken down by Lucas Holderman. Rushing a far-side cradle, Ryan quickly reversed Holderman and got the big-time fall in 1:34, giving the team six points to close the gap to 12-9.

At 132, junior Jude Pallo (2-2) was able to tie the match at 12-12 with a workmanlike 12-5 win over Alex Holt. He had a nice crackdown single leg takedown, and in a scramble cemented Holt to his back for three near fall points.

138 pounder junior Quinten Edwards (1-3) was then tech-falled in 3:43 by Seth Koleno, off of the work of four sets of back points on a relentless near-sided cradle assault.

At 145, junior Caleb Freeland (3-2) fell to Garrett Rigg by an 11-5 score. The match could have been closer, but Rigg was scrappy and at one point went from nearly being taken down to cementing Caleb out of bounds and gaining the takedown himself when he kept his toes in bounds. In the third period, Caleb was clearly winded and Rigg was able to pick up three more slick takedowns and distance himself.

Making his varsity wrestling debut, sophomore Nate Barr (1-0) bumped up to 152 to wrestle Bald Eagle’s Larry Poole. Down 7-3 after the first period off the work of a nasty Russian tie throw, Barr chose down and got a quick escape and a takedown right into a pin for the Bisons.

Then senior Hunter Wright (1-3) wrestled Gage McClenahan at 160 where he was major decisioned by a score of 9-1. At the end of the third period, McClenahan finished a very nice fireman’s carry, but was unable to lock up an always deadly low-leg cradle before Hunter broke free to prevent further damage.

At 170, sophomore Brett Zatoni (0-3) fought till the end, but was outpaced by Richard Taylor, who accumulated five takedowns, an escape, and two stall points to best Zattoni 13-5. At one point, Zattoni got in deep on a shot, and he may have surprised himself with his young potential, as he paused for just enough time to let Taylor recover.

182 pound senior Luke McGonigal (4-0) then took the mat, as well as about all the air out of Dylan Bisel’s lungs. Using the boots and a power half, Luke punished Dylan for about five and a half minutes, never allowing Dylan the opportunity to move his head off the mat. Like a lion who has bored toying with his prey, McGonigal finally ran out front and cement-mixed Dylan to his back, recording the fall in 5:40.

At 195, sophomore Brandon Daubs (0-3) was pinned by David Close in just :53 seconds.

Then at 220, junior Avry Gisewhite (3-2) got himself into a good old fashioned brawl against Rilee Bechdel. Bechdel quickly took Gisewhite down and got three backpoints off of a merkel, making the score 5-0 after one. Gisewhite was then able to get an escape in the second period. But the third period is where things got interesting. After Bechdel got an escape to start the period, he chose to attempt a poorly thrown headlock, and in a scramble Avry hit a cement job to get an exhilarating pin, after being down 6-1, bringing the dual score to 34-30 in favor of the Eagles.

To end the match, junior Kevin Helsel (0-3) was outmuscled by Kurt Hall, and ultimately pinned in 2:53.

The final score of the match was 40-30. Even though Clearfield lost, there were great moves pulled off by both teams, and Clearfield was able to get falls in several close matches, including two matches where their wrestlers were behind.

Clearfield will travel to DuBois on Friday to take on the District IX favorites.
