CLEARFIELD — Adam Jury (Class of 2007) delivered a walk-off double in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Black Team came from behind to defeat the Red Team 8-7 in the 13th annual Bison Baseball Alumni Game at the Lawrence Township Recreation Park Saturday.
The game and ensuing meal at the Clearfield VFW Post 1785 Picnic Grounds culminated a weekend of activities for more than 40 former Bison players and their families.
Jury had a great day at the plate with four hits and five runs batted in. He and Lucas Malloy (’07) were named co-Most Valuable Players for the Black Team. Malloy had blasted a three-run homer in the fourth inning.
Jason Walker (’89), who also hit a three-run homer, was the Red Team MVP.
Gold Glove winners were Todd Hainsey (’92) for the Black Team and stellar catcher Brent Lykens (’91) for the Red Team.
Randy Zortman (’76) was honored as Rookie of the Year in his first alumni game appearance.
Former long-time assistant coach Denny Zelenky (1985-2005) also was welcomed back for his initial alumni game.
In the annual Home Run Derby, Jury was the winner with Kevin Lykens (’95) finishing second.
Jury and 50-50 winner Brent Lykens graciously returned their cash prizes back to the Clearfield Baseball Association, which was able to donate a $300 check to this year’s charity, Sofia’s Education Fund.
Sofia is the daughter of recently deceased alum David Falvo (’82). Several of his team members and classmates were on hand for a pre-game tribute to the former Bison first baseman.
Sponsors for the 2017 event were Bob Boob’s Garage, Bender Automotive, Dairy Queen, Pete Hess Construction and Aaron Rowles.
Special thanks to Bison Baseball Alumni Game Committee members Donnie Shimmel (’84), Jeff Kavelak (’87), Brandon Billotte (’98), Chris Peacock (’91) and Ed Yeager (’75).
Sept. 14 and 15 will be the dates for next year’s alumni weekend.
