John Saupp Jr., 85, of Ginter and formerly of Woodbridge, Va., died Wednesday, July 19, 2017 at Hollidaysburg Veterans Home.
Born Sept. 4, 1931 in Smithmill, Pa., he was the son of the late John and Anna (Betza) Saupp.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran who had served from 1951-1955.
He graduated from Madera High School in 1948. He then attended George Washington University and American University in Washington, D.C.
He was a former member of the St. Mary’s Byzantine Catholic Church in Manassas, Va., and most recently a member of the St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church in Ramey.
He married Mary Sura on Nov. 3, 1956 at the St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church, Ramey. She survives in Hollidaysburg.
He was the regional vice president of N.T.E.U in Washington, D.C.; vice-commander of the American Legion, State of Virginia; life member of American Legion Post 364 in Woodbridge, Va., Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge 327 in Houtzdale, VFW Post 6321 in Smithmill, Morann Club, Carpathian Club, Bavarian Club and AmVets; and vice president of the Annunciation Society of St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church in Ramey.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Elizabeth Hunter and her husband, Robert of Stafford, Va., Patricia Reeves and her husband, Gareth, of Richmond, Va., and Michelle Henley and her husband, Kyle, of Brooksville, Fla.; four grandchildren, Sarah Pentzakis and her husband, George, John Hunter, Emily Hunter and Jacob Henley; and two great-grandchildren, Ava and Mila Pentzakis.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Karen Saupp; a brother, Paul Saupp and his wife, Martha; and a son-in-law, Matthew Murphy.
The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. Friday and from 9 a.m. – 9:45 a.m. Saturday at the Kruise-Spewock Funeral & Cremation Services Inc., Ramey. Parastas will be sung at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church, Ramey, with the Rev. Anthony Balistreri officiating. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Ukrainian Cemetery, Ramey.
