CLEARFIELD – A new scholarship fund has been established with the Clearfield County Charitable Foundation to honor Marsha Novey.

Marsha was “an amazing athlete”, according to her brother, Marty, who went on to say that she was a member of the swim and cross country teams in school. She was a team player who “always gave it her all,” in whatever she did.

Marsha passed away in 1992, at the age of 28, after being involved in a car accident in Clearfield.

Marty explained that the family feels like there is much more Marsha could have done with her life and they wanted to give back to the community.

“What better way than a scholarship?”  He said they chose what was special to Marsha and “swimming was her thing.”

Marty and his mother now live in Maryland, but the family wanted to establish the fund here.

“Clearfield was a part of her life,” he stated.

Marsha was a 1982 graduate of the Clearfield High School and Edinboro College. Prior to her death, she was a social worker in a foster care agency in Harrisburg.

The new annual scholarship will be awarded to a senior at the Clearfield Area Junior-Senior High School who is a member of the swim team.

This is the first year for this scholarship that was awarded to Peyton Priester of Clearfield. Peyton will be attending York College of Pennsylvania where he will study computer engineering.

In the future, Marty said they may expand the program to award two scholarships each year or give the recipient funds for two years.

The Novey family has already been generous to Clearfield. In 2015 they donated their former Novey Metal site near the West Branch of the Susquehanna River where it became the Raftsman Memorial Park.

The Novey family settled in Clearfield over 100 years ago and Abe and Ida Novey started their scrap metal business there. Abe’s son, Sol and his wife, Gladys continued the business that is now known as Novey Recycling.

The CCCF is a local charitable endowment that funds charities within Clearfield County allowing them to grow and benefit the local community forever. It provides a simple way to fulfill multiple charitable interests while keeping administrative expenses to a minimum.

Contributions to the Marsha Novey Scholarship or any of the Clearfield County Charitable Foundation’s funds may be made at www.Clearfieldcharitablefoundation.org or can be mailed to: P.O. Box 1442, Clearfield PA 16830. Individuals and organizations interested in establishing a fund should call 814-592-7331.
