Lady Tide Lack Clutch Hitting Against Lady Crusaders

ST. MARYS — The Curwensville Area High School softball team out-hit Elk County Catholic but couldn’t push across any runs and was tagged with a 4-0 setback in Northern Allegany League Small School South Division action Monday afternoon.

Winning pitcher Michelle Gerber scattered six hits and registered five strikeouts.

Chloe Tubbs singled and doubled and Bailey Bloom also doubled for the Lady Tide.

The Lady Crusaders (2-0) scored all of their runs off Rachel LeGars, who surrendered only three hits and one walk while whiffing three in her first start.

The first two runs were unearned due to a pair of misplays after Emily Evers had singled with two outs in the first inning.

Two innings later, Evers turned LeGars’ lone free pass to Brandi Clyde into a run with a double and then scored all the way from second on Josie Smith’s groundout.

Clerissa Cole relieved and turned in a sparkling three-inning stint, striking out two and allowing just one hit.

“I couldn’t ask for anything more from Rachel and Clerissa,” Lady Tide coach Allen Leigey said. “I told my whole team they’ve gotta get them some runs.”

Curwensville (0-2) couldn’t break through against Gerber, though.

“I thought we would hit her better,” Leigey said. “We didn’t strike out, but we should have hit the ball with a little more authority.”

The Lady Tide travel to Johnsonburg for another Northern Allegany League game Wednesday.
