SHEFFIELD – The Curwensville Golden Tide football squad kept its unblemished season going and its unbeaten streak against Sheffield alive on Saturday afternoon by trouncing the Wolverines, in Sheffield, 43-0.
And it was the Golden Tide defense coming up with its first shutout of the 2016 campaign and another stellar game by running back Nick Stewart.
The Wolverines never came close to the Tide red zone as Curwensville remained one of four unbeaten 3-0 teams in the Allegheny Mountain League Southern Division. The Tide are joined by Brockway, Kane and Elk County Catholic in the unblemished department.
As for running back Stewart, the junior added five more trips to the end zone to push his overall touchdown production this season to a whopping 14 in just three games. Stewart totalled 129 yards on 19 carries for the afternoon.
Sheffield did start out tough defensively as it took the Golden Tide until the 1:54 mark of the opening quarter to put points on the scoreboard.
A four yard run by Stewart and Madison Weber’s extra point boot put the visitors out in the lead 7-0 on a mostly sunny, very warm and humid day in the Allegheny National Forest region of northern Pennsylvania.
Then it became roll Tide, roll, as Stewart closed out the first frame with a 46 yard run with 31 seconds remaining. Weber added the PAT and after one it was 14-0 Tide.
Two more Stewart scores in the second 12 minutes basically put Sheffield away for the afternoon.
With great protection, Tide quarterback Bryce Timko picked up his first touchdown toss of the year on a swing pass to Stewart coming out of the backfield that went 73 yards for the score. With 9:03 to go before the break Weber tacked on another PAT giving Curwensville a 21-0 margin.
Stewart took the pigskin on a seven yard ride into the end zone with 1:11 left before halftime and then added the two point conversion.
At the half it was 29-0 in favor of the Golden Tide.
The mercy rule came into play with 4:48 to go in the third quarter when Stewart went in from the one yard line and Weber’s PAT was perfect. Now 36-0 the Tide could sit back and watch the clock run under the mercy rule procedures.
Curwensville would add another score in the fourth quarter on a Timko to senior wide out Eli Jacobs on a 17 yard strike with 9:09 left in the contest.
Weber added the extra point, her fifth of the afternoon, setting the final at 43-0 in favor of Curwensville.
The Tide defense came up with three turnovers, two were interceptions, one each by Noah Von Gunden and Lincoln Giuffre. For Von Gunden it was his team leading second pick.
The Tide now own an all-time record of 12-0 against Sheffield after Saturday’s victory.
Curwensville (3-0) returns home on Friday to play the Gators of Port Allegany with kickoff set for 7 pm at Riverside Stadium.
