EVERETT — Two late outbursts lifted Clearfield to an 11-7 win over Young Township in a Pennsylvania American Legion Region 7 Tournament elimination bracket game at the Everett Area High School Field Sunday afternoon.
The Chiefs snapped a 2-2 tie with a four-run salvo in the sixth inning and broke it open with a five-run rally in the seventh to advance to the elimination bracket quarterfinals against tourney host and Cambria-Somerset regular season champion Bedford (20-2) Monday at noon on the same diamond.
Young Township, the Indiana County League runner-up, made the final respectable with two runs in the eighth and three in the ninth off winner Will Myers, who gave the Clearfield staff a boost with his first nine-inning complete game.
Myers, making just his third start, struck out a career-high nine but did not issue a walk. He hit one batter and surrendered 15 singles, five in the last two frames.
Thayne Morgan paced Clearfield (15-9) hitters with a single, triple, home run and three RBIs.
Seven other Chiefs contributed to a 13-hit attack, with Ty Bender, Zane Morgan and Bryce Timko chipping in two apiece. One of Morgan’s was a triple.
After stranding seven runners in the first five innings, the Central Penn League’s No. 2 seed broke through against Devin Fairman with two outs in the sixth.
Bender singled across the go-ahead run, and three more Chiefs scored on an outfield misplay.
Triples by the Morgan twins highlight the big seventh inning that made it 11-2.
Three Clearfield errors gave Young Township two runs in the eighth, and the visiting team added three in the ninth with three hits and the fourth of five Chief miscues.
With the help of his own pickoff and catcher Zane Morgan throwing out two runners on steal attempts, Myers had kept Young Township at bay after giving up four consecutive hits to start the game, including RBI singles by Fairman and Caddis Coscarelli.
Thayne Morgan answered with a home run, the first of his career, over the left field fence that measures 365 feet down the line, and the Chiefs drew even in the third inning when Justin Fedder singled and scored on a two-out error.
Fedder has hit safely in his last 11 games.
Seven of Clearfield’s runs were unearned due to seven Young Township errors.
Only four of the 10 charged to Fairman, the losing hurler, were earned.
Central Penn League champion Beech Creek moved into the winner’s bracket final with an 8-4 win over Bedford and will play Kiski Valley, which defeated Claysburg.
Indiana County League champ Punxsutawney rallied to edge Latrobe 10-9 and will meet Claysburg in the other elimination bracket game Monday.
