JULIAN – Work to replace a bridge in Centre County will get under way June 6, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT).
The state-owned bridge is on Township Route 568 (Railroad Avenue) in the village of Julian and is currently weight limit posted for 29 tons for single vehicles and 38 tons for combination vehicles.
Replacing the bridge will removed the weight-limit postings, and allow PennDOT to remove it from Centre County’s structurally deficient list.
The bridge will be closed during construction work and a detour will be in effect from June 6 through Aug. 31.
Signs will direct drivers to use Routes 3040 (Alternate 220/South Eagle Valley Road), 3042 (Skytop Mountain Road), Route 550, Township Route 569 (Julian Pike), and Township Road 568 (Railroad Avenue).
Emergency services vehicles will be able to move through the work site in order to provide quick and efficient service.
The current bridge is 42-feet long and dates from 1935. The bridge spans Laurel Run and carries an average of more than 1,000 vehicles daily.
Should work progress allow, PennDOT will open the new bridge prior to Aug. 31.
Lycoming Supply Inc. of Williamsport is the contractor on this $636,000 project.
PennDOT reminds drivers to use caution in construction zones, follow all detour signs, obey posted speed limits, and always buckle up.
