Bishop’s Hit in 8th Gives Redden, Lady Bison 2-0 Victory

HOLLIDAYBSURG — The Clearfield Area High School softball team was staring at a third consecutive shutout and possibly wasting another strong pitching performance by Raeleigh Redden until Aspen Bishop came through with a big hit in the top of the eighth inning at Legion Park Monday afternoon.

Bishop lashed a one-out single down the left field line to drive in Nikki Brossard and Alana Kochan, ending the Lady Bison’s string of scoreless innings at 23.

Nikki Brossard bounced into a forceout after Lindsay Hand reached base on an error, Alana Kochan beat out a bunt and Brooke Cline followed with a swinging bunt to load the bases for Bishop.

Redden then completed her whitewash job against Hollidaysburg (4-14) for the 2-0 win in the non-league game, lowering her earned run average to 2.60 in the process.

The Lady Bison senior pitched a five-hitter with four strikeouts and one walk in outdueling Emily Dick, who fanned nine while allowing nine hits and one free pass.

Defensively, Clearfield did not commit an error for only the second time this season.

Three Lady Bison accounted for all but one of the their hits, Brossard with a double and two singles, Cline with a double and a single and Sierra Jones with two singles.

Clearfield posed the only other serious threat in the fourth when Cline doubled and moved to third on a wild pitch while Bishop was drawing a walk. Jones bunted Bishop into scoring position, too, but Dick escaped the jam with two strikeouts.

Despite a pair of leadoff doubles by Mikayla Focht, the Lady Tigers did not have a runner touch third base until Sammy Parnell singled and dashed around second on Hailey Shaffer’s sacrifice bunt.

Redden retired the next two Lady Tigers on infield pop-ups to send the game to the extra frame.

The Lady Bison continue the busy week by hosting Bellefonte in their Mountain League finale Tuesday and Altoona Wednesday before making the long trek to Bradford Thursday.
