Farewell for now, One Direction.

The boy band is heading off on hiatus and closed it out Sunday night with a performance on Britain’s wildly popular reality singing competition “The X Factor.”

It was an appropriate venue, given that the group got its start on the show after Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson all auditioned. Individually, they didn’t make the cut, but they were formed into a boy band that has become one of the most successful in history.

The group (minus Malik, who left the group in March) performed music from their latest album, “Made in the A.M.,” from Wembley Arena in London.

They also shared a video thank you to their fans on their official Facebook page.

The group’s devoted fanbase is well known on social media, and after the performance, they started the trending hashtag #ThisIsNotTheEndOfOneDirection worldwide as they poured out their grief over the hiatus.

It was reported in August that the group would take a break after five years and five albums to pursue individual projects.
