More racial unrest in the Midwest. More suspects sought in Thailand bombing. And The Donald speaks his mind (yet again).
It’s Thursday, and here are five things to know for your new day.
ST. LOUIS
Unrest: Police officers shoot and kill a man. People gather in the streets to protest. Bricks and bottles are thrown; tear gas is used. Another night in Ferguson, Missouri? No, this was right next door in north St. Louis last night, where protests broke out after an 18-year-old man was killed by police earlier in the day. Police said he was shot after pointing a gun at two officers who were carrying out a search warrant. Police used tear gas to disperse the demonstrators after they said the crowd threw things at officers.
BANGKOK BOMBING
‘Big network’: The search for clues in this week’s bombing in the Thai capital extends way beyond a man in a yellow shirt. Last night police said at least 10 people may have been involved in the deadly bombing, which killed 20 people and left more than 120 wounded. Originally authorities were concentrating on a “foreigner” — dressed in a yellow T-shirt and wearing dark-framed glasses — who was seen on video putting a backpack under a bench in a shrine and then walking away.
WILDFIRES
Firefighters killed: Three firefighters died battling blazes in north-central Washington state Wednesday, when they were overcome by flames after they had a vehicle accident. Four other firefighters were injured. Gov. Jay Inslee said the fire threatens 11 counties and the lands of four Native American tribes, after already destroying more than 50 homes and burning through more than 235,000 acres. Wildfires on the West coast — aided by severe drought — have also blackened parts of California and Oregon for weeks.
CAMPAIGN 2016
The interview: Donald Trump will kick out all illegal immigrants, watch Sunday talk shows for military advice and end birthright citizenship. Oh, and he’d also scare the Pope. Those are the highlights from The Donald’s full sit-down interview with CNN’s Chris Cuomo last night. Trump also said it’s going to be hard for Hillary Clinton to overcome her email scandal, bashed Jeb Bush over his Planned Parenthood flub and promised to be “the greatest jobs president that God ever created.”
U.S. AND CHINA
Agent angst: There are Chinese secret agents in the U.S., and their numbers are growing. U.S. officials say the number of agents — members of China’s security service, sent here to pressure Chinese citizens to return home to face justice — has spiked in recent months. Placing such agents on American soil without notifying U.S. officials is a crime, but China says it is not violating any treaties and is simply trying to fight corruption.
