TREASURE LAKE – The investigation is continuing into a structure fire that occurred just before 2 a.m. Saturday at 13473 Treasure Lake Rd. in Sandy Township, according to the state police at DuBois.
According to state police, the fire originated at an outside wall at a gas fireplace. It then progressed up through the flue cavity and the roof of the residence.
Damage is estimated at $200,000, state police said. It was noted that there were strong storms in the area at the time of the fire, and lightning may have been a factor in the fire.
The residents were home at the time of the fire and able to exit with their cat to safety. Firefighters were able to “knock down the blaze quickly,” according to Sandy Township Fire Chief John Hallowell.
Hallowell noted that a nearby residence was in jeopardy. However, he said that the firefighters were able to secure the scene to prevent any damage to that residence.
DuBois, Union Township, Brady Township, Sykesville and Penfield fire departments responded to the scene. Firefighters remained on the scene until 5 a.m.
