WINGATE — Thomas Summers handcuffed a hard-hitting Bald Eagle Area lineup and Spencer Herrington drove in two runs as the Clearfield Area High School baseball team earned another big Mountain League win, 3-0, Wednesday afternoon.
The Bison gained sole possession of first place at 5-1 with the makeup game victory, moving a half game ahead of Central.
The Eagles (3-3) owned a .333 batting average before being tamed by Summers, who allowed just four safeties in his second complete game shutout of the season.
The senior left-hander, now 4-1, struck out eight, a career high, and walked two while lowering his earned run average to 1.40.
“Another solid performance by Thomas,” Bison coach Sid Lansberry said. “He really was only in trouble once, pitching out of a bases-loaded, one-out situation in the third inning.”
One day after committing seven errors against Philipsburg-Osceola, the Bison were flawless in the field.
“We played good defense and got clutch hitting from (Josh) Sorbera and Herrington,” Lansberry said.
Clearfield, which made the most of its five hits off Jason Jones, staked Summers to a 2-0 lead in the second inning.
With the bases loaded thanks to a walk and a hit batsman, Josh Sorbera singled across the game-winning run and Herrington followed with a sacrifice fly.
Herrington singled with two outs in the seventh inning to drive in Erik Sellers for the second time. Sellers had led off with a single and advanced to second on Noah Cline’s sacrifice bunt.
Brandon Gettig was the lone Eagle to solve Summers, pushing his average over .600 with a single and a double.
The Bison, 6-2 overall, will host Huntingdon Monday in just their second home game.
Mountain League standings — Clearfield 5-1, Central 4-1, Bellefonte 2-1, Huntingdon 3-2, Bald Eagle Area 2-3, Tyrone 1-3, Philipsburg-Osceola 0-3, Penns Valley 0-3.
