CLEARFIELD – The Sons of the American Legion have initiated two projects in DuBois, shared SAL member Barry Abbott at Tuesday’s commissioners’ meeting.
The SAL would like to provide designated parking for veterans. Its first sign will be installed near Luigi’s Ristorante in DuBois, he said.
According to him, the SAL will use an honor system and trust anyone who isn’t a veteran will not park in the designated spaces. He asked the commissioners to help spread the word of the SAL’s veterans parking project.
“We want to see our idea spread throughout our county,” said Abbott. He added that the SAL will assist any municipality that’s interested in providing veterans parking.
The cost of a veteran only parking sign is $15, according to Abbott.
Abbott also shared about the SAL’s paver project to honor all veterans, living and deceased. He said the SAL has started selling black granite pavers to be placed in and around the Howitzer at the DuBois City Park.
The mission of this project, he said, is to honor and memorialize veterans from all military branches. “Our goal is to honor the men, women and even service animals that defended and served our country faithfully,” he said.
According to him, anyone can purchase single or multiple pavers. He emphasized that the SAL will not limit pavers to honor and memorialize just those from DuBois City and its surrounding area. He also said the SAL would encourage other civic and service organizations to join its efforts to honor veterans.
Abbott said the paver project will include an artistic rendition of an American flag (black and white) with pavers surrounding it. He said it will also include an “honors” area for past and present commanders of the American Legion, as well as the resetting of the original headstone of George Montgomery for whom the DuBois American Legion is named after.
Pavers are $100 each and order forms are available at the DuBois American Legion or from Abbott, who can be reached at jbaka@verizon.net or by phone at 814-280-2017. Paver orders will be accepted through March 31.
