Bloom Named OW, Golden Tide Takes Second at Big Dog Tourney

BROCKWAY — Shae Bloom breezed to the 145-pound championship and was selected for the Outstanding Wrestler Award to highlight Curwensville’s solid second-place effort in the 2014 Big Dog Tournament at the Brockway Area High School Saturday.

The Golden Tide junior dominated with falls against Oswayo Valley’s Peter Coules in 37 seconds, Johnsonburg’s Joey Elinski in 58 seconds and Sheffield’s Tanner Bar at 2:20 and a 17-1 tech fall against Brockway’s Dustin Jamison in 4:34.

“I feel he did earn the OW, which was great for him,” said Curwensville coach Dean Swatsworth, who noted Bloom had to use up most of his injury time due to a cut above one eye in the final bout.

Senior 152-pounder Jake Lancaster, one of four Golden Tide matmen who claimed runner-up laurels in the round-robin format, also departed with extra hardware.

He received the award for the most falls in the least time with an aggregate of 3:10 for three pins, showing the lights to Sheffield’s Kevin Evans in 24 seconds, Oswayo Valley’s Dawson Mesler in 35 seconds and Port Allegany’s Eli Knapp at the 2:11 mark.

Lancaster appeared on his way to the title by building a 7-0 lead on Brockway’s Cody McClintick after one period but got caught on his back by the Rover during a third-period flurry and was pinned at 4:31.

Three other Curwensville wrestlers were denied titles by Brockway opponents, Sam Bressler (138) dropping a 4-2 decision to Jack Glasl after reeling off three falls and a technical fall, Hunter Lancaster (160) getting pinned by Brandon Little and Ben Junod (182) being edged 3-1 by Mike Martino.

Lancaster and Junod registered falls in their only other matches.

Placing third for the Golden Tide were Anthony Winebold at 113, Seth Woolcock at 120, Jeremy Gardner at 126, Logan Charles at 132, Kaleb Witherite at 160 and James Lee at 285. Woolcock, Witherite and Lee won two bouts apiece.

“I saw some improvements in the lower weights,” Swatsworth said. “Woolcock and Charles beat Johnsonburg kids they loss to on Tuesday.

“We worked on some little things, and I give them credit for listening to what we’re trying to do.”

The Golden Tide accumulated 173.5 points in finishing behind Brockway, which crowned nine champs and amassed 272 points.

“I was banking on getting second, because I know Brockway has a good team,” Swatsworth said. “I can see the stuff we’re working on being used in matches, and we’re wrestling better.

“Overall, we just haven’t grabbed that next rung on the ladder yet.”

The Golden Tide resumes its dual meet schedule at Punxsutawney Jan. 6.

Brockway’s other champs were Ryan Carlson at 113, Mitchell Overbeck at 120, Mason Lindenmuth at 132, Anthony Benson at 170 and Hunter Richardson at 285.

Also winning titles were Sheffield’s Kole Holden at 106, Johnsonburg’s Devon Norlin at 126, Oswayo Valley’s Dalton Green at 195 and Port Allegany’s Ethan Budd at 220.
