Golden Tide Wrestlers Win First For Swatsworth, Dump Johnsonburg 41-19

CURWENSVILLE – The Curwensville Area High School wrestling team won its first dual meet of the new season on Tuesday night on the Golden Tide’s new home wrestling mat.

With five forfeits the Tide (1-1) rolled to a 41-19 victory over visiting Johnsonburg to pick up that first win, which was also the first for new Curwensville head coach Dean Swatsworth.

Afterwards, Swatsworth said, “I thought we improved in some areas since we wrestled Ridgway last week. I was very pleased that the things we have worked on since that bout worked out for us tonight.”

Johnsonburg won four of the six bouts actually wrestled but the Tide had such a huge advantage with the forfeits it was tough for the Rams to contest for the team win.

Three weight classes had no bouts; 106, 195 and 220.

The two wrestlers winning for the Tide were Sam Bressler at 138 pounds and Shae Bloom at 145.

Bressler won for the fifth time in six bouts when he made quick work of Ram Jacob Zimmerman with a pin in just 54 seconds that sealed the team win.

Unbeaten Bloom, now 5-0, picked up a 20-1 second period technical fall in a match were he turned Joey Elinski of Johnsonburg every which way but loose.

Swatsworth closed, saying, “I thought Sam (Bressler) and Shae (Bloom) really wrestled well for us. And the lightweights keep working and are getting better.”

The Golden Tide junior high also won, beating the young Rams 59-18 in the evening’s first match.

Curwensville will wrestle next on Saturday in the Big Dog Tournament in Brockway. Wrestling is scheduled to start at 9 am.
