Curwensville Wins 7-6 Thriller Over Kane in Key AML Battle

CURWENSVILLE – Two teams, both 5-1, fighting to stay alive in the Allegheny Mountain League (AML) South Division race squared off at Riverside Stadium in Curwensville on Friday night.

And in the end the Curwensville Golden Tide picked up the huge victory over the Kane Wolves 7-6, in a defensive battle.

With the win the Tide move to 6-1 on the year and trail Ridgway by one game in the AML standings. The Elkers won a key battle Friday night over Brockway 28-14 to remain perfect on the season at 7-0.

All the scoring on the night between the Tide and Wolves came in the second quarter and all in the final 1:10 before the intermission.

Freshman Nick Stewart of Curwensville scored on an 11 yard run off of the left side for the game’s first tally. Senior place kicker Heather Thorp, hit what proved to be the winning score when she put her PAT attempt through the uprights giving the Golden Tide a 7-0 lead.

On the ensuing kickoff Curwensville was flagged twice in a row as the ball rolled out of play each time. On the third kickoff attempt by the Tide, Kane downed the ball at its own 47 yard line.

With just six seconds left before the half, Kane quarterback Jack Kocjancic hit Shane Rolick with an 11 yard touchdown pass. However, the extra point attempt by kicker Dillon Mattis was no good, keeping Curwensville out in front 7-6. The kick by Mattis certainly had the distance and height but apparently was missed wide.

The touchdown drives by both Curwensville and Kane were aided by untimely penalties that kept both drives alive.

Kane had a chance to go into the lead with a 29 yard field goal attempt by Mattis in the fourth quarter on a fourth and one at the Tide 19 yard line. That kick went wide right.

Curwensville defensive back Alex Hill  picked off a Kojancic pass late in the fourth quarter, deep in Tide territory, to preserve the thrilling win before a packed Riverside Stadium.

After four straight home games Curwensville hits the road next Friday with a battle against the Rovers of Brockway. Kick-off for the game is set for 7:30 pm.
