RIDGWAY — The Clearfield Area High School cross country teams competed on Saturday at the very competitive Ridgway Invitational.
Lady Bison freshman Paige Mikesell was able to place second out of 104 entries in the girl’s race. She ran a 19:58 to finish in the runner-up spot to Elk County Catholic state medal winner Victoria Dippold, who ran a blistering 18:53. Clearfield only brought three runners to the invite, so they did not score as a team.
The boys, however, place seventh out of 14 teams with freshman Alex Coval the top Bison with his time of 18:33, good enough to place 22nd out of 144 runners.
Lady Bison head coach John Jacob was impressed with his freshman, “The Ridgway Invitational is starting to get a reputation for having top caliber Cross Country runners. With three state champions competing over the last five years, this race is starting to attract some attention from central and western Pennsylvania schools. Freshman Paige Mikesell let her competition know that she was all business with her second place finish. The only other runner to beat her was a Cross Country and Track medalist from Elk County Catholic, Victoria Dippold. Paige used good race tactics over the first mile to keep her competition in sight, then began to pass runner after runner until her only competition was Michelle Bauer from St Marys. The two runners battled over the last half mile but Paige was able to put on a long drive from that point on to keep a substantial gap and hold her off. This is the first girl over my 13 year career that has broken the 20 minute mark; and to do it as a freshman goes to show Paige’s talent and work ethic. Although we did not score as a complete team I know Claire Mikesell, Kristi Fox and Nikol Chew know what they will have to do to make a trip to states this year.”

About the boy’s race, Coach Jacob added, “On the boy’s side Alex Coval was the first to cross the line with a time of 18:53. With all of the district competitors at the Invitational, Alex is in one of the spots that will help him make it to the State Championships next month. Josiah McClarren did not have his best time, but he did run fast enough to put him in a position that will help him compete for one of the state championship spots. Freshman Quentin Edwards had a
good day finishing third on the team and tying a personal best time for the year. We were looking for a strong finish as a team but with two hard races in one week we took a little step back. Hopefully seeing our competition will help the boys see how competitive they can be when it comes time for the District 9 Championships.”

The Bison and Lady Bison will host Hollidaysburg on Wednesday in the final tune up before the Mountain League Championships on October 15.
