Seven District 9 Wrestlers Win NW-AA Region Titles

SHARON — Kane 170-pounder Evan Delong claimed his third Northwest Region Class AA Tournament championship, Brookville 138-pounder Brock Zacherl earned his second gold medal and five other District 9 wrestlers climbed to the top of the winner’s stand for an impressive showing against District 10’s best during the finals in Sharon High School Saturday evening.

Delong became just the 10th D-9 matmen to boast at least three region crowns, the first in Class AA since 2004, with a 6-2 victory over Dakota Geer of Franklin in one of 10 matches between district champs. The Wolves’ senior reigned at 145 as a sophomore and 160 a year ago.

Zacherl repeated at 138 by majoring Fort LeBoeuf’s George McGuire 11-2.

The district’s first-time champs were Brookville’s Taylor Ortz at 113 and Brodie Zacherl at 152, Brockway’s Ryan Carlson at 106, Kane’s Cody Blankenship at 126 and Coudersport’s Cody Bova at 160.

Ortz pinned Jamestown’s Faris Messai at 2:24 for his 20th consecutive fall and Bova pinned Brookville’s Jimmy Miller at 1:28 in the lone title bout between D-9 rivals.

Carlson defeated Reynolds’ Gage Bayless 5-2, Blankenship edged Reynolds’ Michael Bartolo 4-3 and Brodie Zacherl mirrored his twin brother’s major by the identical score against Cochranton’s Robert Boozer.

At 32-0, returning PIAA silver medalists Delong and Bova will be among an elite group of only 14 qualifiers boasting unblemished records when the Class AA state tourney gets under way Thursday morning in the Giant Center at Hershey.

Miller was one of D-9’s five runners-up.

Redbank Valley 120-pounder Willie Gruver was gunning for his third title but was denied by Jarrette Carter of Fort LeBoeuf in a 7-6 scrap.

The other three were victims of D-10 standouts who were repeaters.

Zach Vroman of Brookville was blanked 3-0 by Levi Stoyer of Reynolds at 145, previously-undefeated Zach Bruce of Cranberry had to default to Dylan Reynolds of Saegertown in the third period at 182 when he suffered a leg injury while being taken down in a 1-1 standoff and Ben Carrillo of Redbank Valley was pinned at 1:42 by unbeaten defending state champion Sam Breese of Lakeview at heavyweight.

Earning trips to Hershey with wins in the consolation finals were Redbank Valley’s Tanner Altobelli (126), Brookville’s Dalton Zimmerman (132) and Oswayo Valley’s Sam Colbert (160).

D-10 also had a three-time champ in Saegertown junior Tyler Vath, who added the 132 title to the 106 and 120 crowns he wore the last two seasons.

Ryan Morris of Corry reigned at 195 again as the sixth seed, defaulting his last two bouts in the D-10 tourney after being injured in a semifinal loss.

Reynolds freshman Cole Rickert ruled at 220.

In the team chase, Reynolds held off Brookville by a 147-138 margin for its 17th championships.

Three other D-9 teams finished in the top 10, Redbank Valley fifth with 59 points, Kane sixth with 50.5 and Brockway ninth with 37.
