HYDE – After building a 22-17 first half lead the Clearfield Lady Bison looked poised to pick up win number two on the season Wednesday night against visiting Central in girls basketball action.
The second half was a different story as far the Lady Bison offense went. And it truly was gone as Clearfield didn’t make its first field goal of the second 16 minutes until sophomore Rachel Glenny hit a bucket with 7:40 remaining in the fourth quarter.
All this helped Central outscore Clearfield over the final two quarters 37-13 to come away with a 54-35 win for first year head coach Mike Horton and the Lady Dragons. Central is now 2-2 on the 2013-14 campaign.
After the Lady Dragons took a 7-6 first period lead, Clearfield put together its best eight minutes of the young season in the second frame with a 16-10 margin to go into intermission up 22-17.
Clearfield junior Maggie Sopic had a monster second quarter with 11 points, including the last seven for the Lady Bison. One of Sopic’s buckets was a three pointer at the buzzer to close the first half.
Then it was Mikaela McGraw’s turn as the junior for Central scored 11 points of her own in the third period as the Lady Dragons had an overwhelming 24-4 advantage in the third.
Clearfield could only come up with four free throws in the third quarter and any hopes of a real nice victory were now gone.
Joe Castagnolo, Lady Bison head coach said, “Central just got hot in the second half and we just didn’t answer. They made some adjustments at the half that we just didn’t react to.”
Then the Clearfield mentor commented about his squad, “I was overall pretty happy with how the girls played. I thought we played hard and good things will happen if we can continue to play that way.”
Sopic paced the Lady Bison with 15 points. Emily Aveni added eight.
It was Ashley Smith and McGraw pacing the Central offense, as each girl poured in 18 points.
On the night Central was 12 of 13 from the free throw line while Clearfield connected on 10 of 22.
In the junior varsity game Central also came out victorious with a 36-32 win. Sarah Lash had nine points for the young Lady Bison squad.
Clearfield (1-2) will be home once again, Friday night, when they host the Huntingdon Lady Bearcats with JV action starting at 6 pm and the varsity to immediately follow.
