DECATUR TOWNSHIP – The Clearfield-based state police are investigating a hit-and-run accident that occurred Saturday on Copelin Road in Decatur Township.

A vehicle was traveling eastbound near the intersection of Copelin Road and Decatur Street.  The vehicle began backing up for unknown reasons and then traveled off the south berm of the roadway. There, it struck a 2008 Saturn Aura and then a large tree with its back end.

The vehicle fled the scene southbound on Decatur Street. It’s believed to be a dump truck; upon fleeing the scene, it spilled some of its load onto the roadway near the tree that it had struck. The dump truck was hauling a mixture of reddish-colored coal cinders and small pieces of asphalt, state police said.
