PENFIELD – The following programs have been announced for the Parker Dam State Park.
Friday, Aug. 9
Incredible Journey of the Butterflies:
8:30 p.m. – Campground Amphitheater
Take a journey two-thousand miles, no GPS and only the size of a human hand. Take the journey with the monarch butterflies as they make their annual trip to Mexico with such precision. Scientists will look at just how the monarchs are able to make such a tremendous feat of endurance.
Kid’s Olympics- Sponsored by: The Friends of Parker Dam
1 p.m. – 3 p.m. – Beach House
Children ages 2 to 18 years can come participate in a variety of events to become the champion of their age division. Try your hand at the Scavenger Hunt, Bean-bag Throw, Fun-noodle Toss, Pine Cone Drop, Seed Spit, and Frisbee Throw. Age divisions will be: 2-5, 6-8, 9-13, and 14-18. Participants must compete in all events to win their division and a prize.
The History of the S’more:
6:30 p.m. – Campground Amphitheater
Graham Crackers, marshmallows, and chocolate didn’t just fall out of the cupboard and get put together. Learn about each of these tasty ingredients, where they come from, and how when we put them together, we get one of our favorite outdoor treats. There will be ingredients available to make your own s’more.
Perseid Meteor Shower:
9 p.m. – Beach House
It happens each year at this time and you can watch and learn about why. Also, learn the best times and locations to view this meteor shower and other night sky events during the year.
Sunday, Aug. 11
Paws, Claws and Jaws:
3 p.m. – Beach House steps
Black bears are one of the most remarkable creatures roaming around in Penn’s Woods. Their adaptations and survival behavior are incredibly interesting. Come learn more about these creatures and understand that there is a great deal that you may not have known about them before.
Tea and Talk:
6 p.m. – Beach House steps
Join us as we drink natural tea from sweet fern that grows here in the park. Learn more about natural teas, and as usual, bring your questions about the park, wildlife, or anything else that the Naturalist might be able to answer for you.
