Two Beech Creek Hurlers Blank Chiefs 3-0 in CPL Opener

BEECH CREEK — Clearfield’s first venture into the American Legion baseball wood bat era was not very productive.

The Post 6 Chiefs managed only four singles as Beech Creek’s Justin Hummel and Kenny Heverly combined for a 3-0 shutout in the Central Penn League lidlifter for both teams Tuesday evening.

Josh Sorbera had two of the hits off winning pitcher Hummel, who worked five innings with three strikeouts and four walks.

Heverly was near perfect over the last two frames, allowing only one walk, to earn the save.

Devin Jones went the distance for Clearfield, striking out seven and walking one. He gave up six hits and two earned runs.

Chuck Probst led off the bottom of the first inning with a triple and scored the only run Beech Creek needed on Cole Hanley’s groundout.

Probst reached on an error and scored an insurance run on another Clearfield miscue in the third inning.

The Chiefs will play their home opener Thursday when Altoona visits the Bison Sports Complex.
