WOODSTOCK, VA – After three weather related postponements in Pennsylvania, the Curwensville Area High School baseball team finally got the 2013 season started in Virginia at the Harry Combs Classic on Saturday.
Denny Johns, starting his fourth season as Golden Tide head coach, saw his team drop both games, 11-10 to Central in the opening game, and then 13-2 to Millbrook in the night cap.
The Golden Tide took command of game one versus Central, holding a 7-1 lead after the first two innings thanks to a five run outburst in the top of the second.
Central would erupt for seven tallies in the bottom of the third as Curwensville made costly errors, giving the opposition numerous extra outs. The Tide ended the game with a total of seven miscues, while walking six and hitting five Central batters.
In the top of the first inning Curwensville pushed across two runs as Tanner Elensky singled, stole second base and eventually scored on a two out single by Jake Stiles.
After Brad Coudriet singled the Tide had runners on first and second.
Brett Gardner then reached base on a error which enabled Elensky to race home with the second run of the opening frame for Curwensville.
Curwensville did regain the lead in the top of the third inning, 9-8, by pushing two runs across and then took a 10-8 margin with a run in the top half of the sixth before Central rallied in its final two at bats to pull out the victory.
The Golden Tide actually out hit Central 12-7, as Elensky had three hits, with Coudriet, Jason Bloom and Hunter McCracken each chipping in with two.
McCracken had the lone extra base hit, a double, for the Golden Tide.

The nightcap was ended for the Tide when Millbrook took down Curwensville by the ten run mercy rule, 13-2, after five innings.
Curwensville scored its lone runs in the bottom of the third inning as Tanner Elensky led off with a single and moved to third when Travis Lansberry also followed with a single.
With runners on first and third, Tide senior Kyle Bloom hit into a fielder’s choice, which scored Elensky.
Jake B. Stiles doubled down the right field line scoring Lansberry with Curwensville’s last tally of its Virginia spring trip.
Millbrook utilized two big innings, six in the top of the third and five more in the fifth frame, which took the Tide out of the contest.
Sophomore Travis Lansberry paced the Golden Tide with two hits while Kyle Bloom and Jake B. Stiles stroked doubles.
Tide coach Johns spoke about the southern trip for his squad, “It was great to finally get on the field for a couple of days with good weather. This tournament is a real test for us as the three other teams we compete against would be classified in Pennsylvania as one triple A school and two quad A schools.”
Johns then talked about both games, “The Central game was definitely one we would like to have back. We left too many outs on the field and they came back and made us pay for that. Millbrook hit us with a couple of big innings that we were unable to recover from.”
The Tide mentor did have a lot to say about the positives he saw, “Overall, though disappointed with two losses, we saw a lot of good things that we’ll be able to move forward and build upon. Pitching was pretty good for the first time out with the exception of a couple of innings when we struggled a little with control. Offensively we came out strong against Central and were very aggressive with our base running. The young man (Braithwaite) from Millbrook kept us pretty much in check with the exception of the inning we got two runs.”
Then Johns closed with, “I’m concerned that we didn’t play better defensively although I think this team has the potential for defense to be one of our strong points. I like the potential within this group of boys and their attitude toward the game. Although we would have loved to come home with at least one win while in Virginia our job now is to refocus and come out strong against Kane on Monday.”
As Johns mentioned, Curwensville, 0-2, is back in action Monday, at home, against Kane with the first pitch set for 4:15 pm.
