PUNXSUTAWNEY – The Punxsutawney Area High School girls basketballĀ team completed the regular season sweep of Clearfield Friday night, 46-30, on the Lady Chucks’ home court.Ā The victory sends Punxsutawney over the 500 mark on the year at 5-4.
The Lady Chucks defeated Clearfield in their first encounter of the 2012-13 season, 39-29, on the Lady Bison home floor back in December.
This time out the Lady Chucks took control of the contest midway through the second quarter after winning the first eight minutes, 14-8.
Punxsutawney found themselves in complete control at the 3:24 point of the second on a three-pointer by Nicole DiPetro that gave the home team a huge 28-13 lead.
At the half the Lady Chucks had a nice 14 point margin to work with, 30-16, and without Clearfield senior Dakota Farmery it could have been worse.Ā A lot worse.
Farmery, who had a game high 15 points, hadĀ 10 first half points to keep the hopes of the Bison alive.Ā Unfortunately, Farmery left the game with an apparent knee injury midway through the final quarter and did not return with the game out of hand at that point.
Turnovers continued to plague Clearfield in the second half, just like the firstĀ 16 minutes, as the Lady Bison just couldnāt deal with the pressure employed by a very scrappy Punxsutawney squad.
The Lady Bison only were able to hit on five free throws in the third quarter as they didnāt have a field goal until Farmery dropped in a bucket with 7:07 left in the final frame.
On the night Clearfield was 11 of 18 from the free throw line, while the Lady Chucks took just one foul shot, a miss.
Alyssa Reitz led Punxsutawney in scoring as the sophomore guard had 11 points, all in the first half.
A very unhappy Clearfield head coach Joey Castagnolo said after the game, āItās real simple, we didnāt take care of the ball.Ā We couldnāt handle the pressure tonight and we face it all the time.ā
Castagnolo continued with, āThey out hustled us from the start.Ā They got every loose ball and every loose rebound. I am, of course, disappointed right now, but I also realize that we have a bunch of games left. And in spite of the loss, I did see some positives to build on.ā
In the junior varsity game Punxsutawney came away with the win, 43-17, in the evening’s first act.Ā Emily Aveni had five for the Lady Bison.
Clearfield, 3-6 on the season, will travel to Tyrone on Wednesday for a battle with the Lady Golden Eagles.Ā The varsity contest is set for tip-ff at 7:30 pm.
